Port Alfred - and yet more by Priscilla Taylor nee Krüger
My sister, Priscilla Maude Taylor in an email today 22nd September 2002.Hey thanks Pris - sorry to have started the old grey matter working again.
Hi Mart (Boy) - How I enjoyed
your journal, "Call back the past- Kowie. Part 1"
I really chuckled at some almost forgotten stories and names. This really got me
thinking, and I have come up with a few additions to your list. The McIvers
( Bettie was the Myhill's daughter) at Killarney, were Alan, Moira, Deidre &
another older sister. Jock Kilian's kids were: John, Andrew &
Elsabeth. Mrs. Herring (teacher) had a daughter, Ethelwynne. Miss
Larsen, brother Roy & other maiden sisters were at Seaview
Boarding House. Other shopkeepers were: Mrs. Heny & her daughter (Jamie
Duvenhage's mom) over the road from Seaview." Emmerlie" - M L I
(Maurice L Israelson) which was the first shop in Wharf Street after the
bridge. "Itchies" - Raymond Itzekowitz, which was next to the
old library where Mrs. Stephens was the librarian. Doug Heny used
to run the Cherry Tree & was most amused when you & I told him that our
sweet money had been earned by pulling out Mom's grey hairs, while Dad was
fishing near the bridge one afternoon! Boet Nel's shop was beyond Euan
Tarrant's butchery. Tilly Green ran The Craft Shop diagonally
opposite the butchery. Jack & Peggy Stokes (kids - Jean & Alan)
ran an Electrical Goods shop in the double storey around the corner from Trevor
Reed's Butchery. Mr. Cousins, next door ran a Taxi Service. His
family were Pat (she worked in Std. Bank with Mom), Teddy (worked
for Dad, then ran the power station @ Kariba), Gavin (Gail Du
Preez-Cubbit also worked there & ran the 1st Card division) & Colleen
(married pine farmer Glyn Handley) who also brought up Gavin's children.
Gavin's wife had died of cancer some time before.

Auntie Pris and Calvin - 2nd June 2000
Further down the road on the
riverside (beyond Manning/Manie Samuel's Boat Shop), in a big old barn
was Harry Mould the shoe repairer. Brian, Les, Lucy etc. were among the
names I remember. Mike Lisher was known as "Mr.. Fire Eyes"
because of his incredible way of dancing/rocking/twisting/shaking etc. to this
song. He sure had rubber legs. Piet Snyman who used to live in the lane
running from the Vic ( where the Fields & Gavin Baxter/daughter
Gillian lived), used to call it Rock 'N Roll Sherry Lane. Dad always had his
annual visit from Doeks & Mary Leibrandt with their dogs Satan
& Pretoors, for their soopie at Christmas time or whenever their thirst
overtook them. They would bring fresh oysters in return. I still have a picture
of them somewhere. Percy Wesson ran the Shell Garage (daughter Marlene
& son Bruce). The Goddards lived beyond us near the Waters' &
Schnetlers. Ivan Goddard who was at the Bathurst Exchange long ago ,
died recently, as did Cynthia Schnetler's ex, Selwyn Du Randt.
Doug Heny passed on about 3 weeks ago in E L at an old age home. Jo Ann was
divorced some time ago & her folks lived with her in Gonubie (Jean died some
years ago). Sport - famous teams as recounted by Dad: THE RISING SUNSETS
and THE RUNAWAY COMEBACKS! Other town folk - Jim & Lil Slaughter
- kids Ronnie, Janet & Jeannie. Ronnie Randall's family. Jack
Ansley who lived opposite Mrs. Powell towards the school - he wore
long shorts or short longs. His younger son Tommy owns Elliot (is amazing) the
furniture removers (a national company). At Mrs. Una Beatrice Powell's
schools Playways & Felicia were her husband Hubert who helped her so much.. Maurice,
Gail & Karen Isenburg from Mansfield Farm were there, Colin, Neale
& Peter Reed (George's sons), Pam Clayton (Alan's daughter), Linda
Turner, Winston & Mickey Nel, Yvonne & Denise Webster,
etc. Leo Strauch lived behind Mrs. Powell. The Fox's lived further up -John
Henry Fox had the Chemist & his adopted kids were Peter-John (who
married Rosemary Walser who lived over the road) and Barbara - Anne.
Maureen & Keith Hayward's folks lived beyond them.
When Judy & Dessie (Des and Pris' children) were small, they would laugh
hysterically at the PICTURES some names conjured up eg. Green- Baby! Here is a
sample: Mr. Hopper, Bebe Green, Ant Green, Midge Green, Mrs. Lisher, Myrtle
De Beer (the bear), Rex Niemand & Daisy, Brian Mould, Les
Mould, Luce Mould, Mrs. Soppit (played piano in band at
Lagoon), Pat Cousins & Teddy Cousins, and Mrs. Sparrow who lived
in Dove Lane, Mr. Guy, Mr. Hutt (John - Kowie Announcer) etc. Bertie
Tennant was the official town photographer (I D) etc. Hugh & Iris
Kelly were the town benefactors. Harry Nailand owned the Grand Hotel.
We can never forget Wally "Ferry" where we paid 1d. to cross the
river. Cecil Lorry 's dad always provided a double feature at the movies
by shouting a warning to the screen actors if something untoward was about to
happen. What a grand little town it was - remember the nyienyies , droggies
& ngwenyas we used to eat - and we survived! I really have rambled on, but
you started my memory bank going today.
