I cannot recall, ad verbatim the wording on the "old" Henry Putt Bridge. But it was certainly impressive. Something along the lines of:

"The Henry Putt bridge"
This bridge was built by Henry Putt in 1906 and was the first concrete-span bridge built in South Africa.
It served as a pedestrian bridge as the walkway on the adjacent "new" bridge was very narrow.

A - The "wreck". Evidently a dredger was laid to rest here many years ago - and is inhabited by a really giant octopus. The water is pretty deep and there can be a lot of fish around.
B - Where the Municipal Offices used to be. There was a deep underwater "well" which, I think, contained a supply of fresh drinking water - for the ships many years ago.
C - Site of the "Town Library".
D - Here used to be the "goods sheds" - where the S.A.R.&.H. used to store their goods. The railway line used to run a few hundred metres down the east bank. Sometimes one had to wait while the trains shunted across the siding.
E - The Publicity Office, old Municipal Market - and southwards, the Power Station.

Kruger - This is where we lived. The two blue strips indicate the concrete strips of our driveway. My Dad built the house with Angus Hilpert. The Hilpert family were highly respected builders. Our address, which sounded so cool was...
47 Pascoe Crescent
Port Alfred.
